Getting into modelling can take time, effort, and a strategic approach. It is important to do your research and not give up if you decide that’s what you want to do. The industry can be a harsh one but there are lots of roads into it, and various roles within.

Push Promotions for example have lots of promotional models on our 3000+ strong staff database. Our models have worked on product launches, photoshoots, exhibitions, trade-shows and catwalks. Here our models do more than stand for photos, they work on behalf of a brand to actively promote a business/product, engaging with the public. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started in the world of modelling:

1. Assess Your Goals and Type of Modelling

Decide on the type of modelling you want to pursue: fashion, commercial, fitness, plus-size, etc. Different types of modelling have different requirements in terms of appearance, body type, and skills. . For example, we recently published an article titles ‘Types Of Modelling’ which I guarantee will include model types you’ve never though of.

2. Build Confidence and Physical Fitness

Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Most modelling requires you to look your best, which means staying fit and healthy. Whether it’s through exercise, good nutrition, or skincare, self-care is key.

Moreover, confidence is key. Models need to feel confident in front of the camera, so practising posing and expressing emotions can be helpful.

3. Create a Portfolio

Invest in a professional portfolio. A modelling portfolio is a collection of your best photos that showcases your look, versatility, and range. Start with professional photographers or even experienced friends who can take high-quality photos. Make sure your portfolio reflects the type of modelling you want to pursue.

Additionally, ensure that your portfolio has a mix of different styles, such as close-up shots, full-length shots, and action shots.

Important note: Don’t oversaturate with photos. Quality over quantity is important. A few strong images are better than dozens of mediocre ones.

4. Research Modelling Agencies

Be sure to look for reputable agencies. Start by researching established modelling agencies that specialise in your area of interest. Some of the top agencies in the industry include Elite, IMG, Ford Models, and Wilhelmina

Then submit to your chosen researched agencies. Many agencies have online application forms where you can submit your portfolio. Include basic information like your height, weight, and body measurements (for fashion modelling). Be sure to follow the agency’s submission guidelines.

Also consider smaller or boutique agencies. These may be easier to get into and can help build your experience before signing with a larger agency.

5. Go to Open Calls and Casting Calls

Next, attend open calls. Many agencies hold open calls, where aspiring models can meet with agents and show off their portfolios. This is an opportunity to get feedback and possibly sign with an agency.

Remember to actually look for casting calls. Websites like Backstage or Model Mayhem list casting calls for various types of modelling gigs. You can apply directly to these calls and audition for different roles.

6. Start Networking

As with every industry, building connections in the industry is important. Networking is key to getting noticed. Attend fashion events, trade shows, and other industry-related activities. Social media platforms like Instagram are also great for networking and showcasing your work.

Consider collaborating with photographers. If you’re just starting out, consider doing TFP (Time for Print) shoots, where you collaborate with photographers who are building their portfolios in exchange for photos. For example, head shot photoshoots can be expensive so this is a great way to get a portfolio together cheaply. It also had the added bonus of connecting you with aspiring and up-and-coming photographers.

It’s all about connections, just look at how many nepo-models there are!

7. Stay Professional

Always be punctual and professional. Be sure to show up on time for shoots and maintain a professional attitude on set. You don’t want to build a bad reputation and essentially blacklist yourself. People talk.

However also be sure to take care of yourself. Sleep well, eat right, and take care of your skin and hair to maintain a healthy appearance.

8. Consider Digital Modelling

With the exponential rise of social media, influencer modelling and digital modelling have become viable entry points. Building a strong following on platforms like Instagram or TikTok can help you get noticed by brands and agencies. Be authentic and engaging in your posts to attract attention. Do not underestimate the power of social media. It can take time to organically grow a following online but huge rewards can be reaped.

9. Avoid Scams

Be cautious of agencies or individuals that ask for upfront fees, promising to make you a model in exchange for money. Legitimate modelling agencies do not ask for money upfront but earn a commission from your earnings once they secure you work.

10. Stay Persistent

As you are likely aware, modelling can be a highly competitive industry, so persistence is important. You may face rejection, but it’s crucial to stay motivated and continue improving your skills and portfolio.

If you get turned down, seek constructive feedback to improve and try again.

11. Consider Modelling Schools

Finally, modelling schools can help you develop your skills, including walking, posing, and portfolio creation. However, they are not necessary to break into the industry, as most successful models get discovered through agencies, open calls, or networking.

NEC Promotional Models

Getting into modelling therefore requires a combination of self-awareness, preparation, persistence, and networking. By developing a strong portfolio, researching agencies, and actively seeking opportunities, you can increase your chances of landing modelling gigs. Always remember that success in the modelling industry doesn’t happen overnight, so staying committed and professional will go a long way.
