Do Your Promotional Staff Need A Uniform?

Whether promotional staff need a uniform depends on various factors, including the nature of the promotion, the brand image, and the goals of the marketing campaign. Here at Push Promotions, we have worked on hundreds of promotional campaigns over ten years, and there are no set rules regarding uniforms. Some brands supply uniforms, some simply request formalwear or a particular colour t-shirt. Others just want their promotional staff to dress casually as they would on a regular non-working day. Therefore there are no rights or wrongs, but here are some considerations:

Staff Uniform Considerations

Brand Image:

If maintaining a consistent brand image is crucial for your promotion, having a uniform for promotional staff will reinforce brand identity. Thus creating a cohesive and professional appearance.

Visibility And Recognition:

Uniforms can make your promotional staff easily identifiable in crowded spaces or events. Event attendees will be able to recognise and approach them for information or engagement. This is especially important at exhibitions where there may be hundreds, if not thousands, of exhibitors and visitors crowded within a small area.

Professionalism:

A uniform can convey a sense of professionalism and competence, which can positively impact the perception of your brand. It may also create a more polished and organised look for your promotional team. Promotional staff may therefore feel like they should ‘rise to the occasion’ in a uniform, and feel the importance of representing the brand effectively.

Theme Or Event Relevance:

Depending on the nature of the promotion or event, having a uniform that aligns with a specific theme can enhance the overall experience for attendees. For example, if your promotion is taking place at a festival, then a formal uniform will admittedly make you stand out, but potentially for the wrong reasons. Instead, consider dressing in classic glittery and feathery festivalwear, but in your brand’s colours to retain some relation to your brand. This will show that your brand has fully embraced the event environment and atmosphere. However, if your staff are completing event registration at a conference or AGM, then formalwear will better suit the tone of the event.

Comfort And Functionality:

Consider the comfort and functionality of the uniform, especially if the promotional staff will be active or moving around a lot. A comfortable and practical uniform can contribute to the effectiveness and satisfaction of your team. For example, having staff in short-sleeved t-shirts outside in the middle of winter is hardly going to inspire staff enthusiasm and devotion.

Branding Opportunities:

The uniform itself can be used as a branding opportunity. Including your logo, slogan, or specific colours on the uniform can increase brand visibility and reinforce messaging. Think of the Butlins redcoats- they are instantly recognisable and make you think of the seaside resorts.

Clothing/Merchandise Promotion:

If you are a clothing or fashion brand, then it makes sense to have your promo staff wear your brand’s clothing. It would be rather embarrassing to have a member of the public ask a staff member where their clothes are from, only for them to direct the potential customer to a rival brand!

Moreover, some brands have such iconic logos and marketing that they can sell related clothing merchandise. For example, Greggs has a collaboration with Primark. Therefore, having promotional staff wear some of this purchasable merchandise will not only help to raise brand awareness but also to directly boost sales.

Consistency Across Locations:

If your promotional campaign is running in multiple locations, a uniform ensures consistency in appearance. This makes it easier for people to associate the promotional efforts with your brand. Moreover, if you then post videos/photos on your website or social media, there will be consistency across all of your brand promotion.

Staff Non-Uniform Options

However, there are instances where a more casual or flexible dress code might be appropriate. It depends on the nature of the promotion. Some uniforms may appear stuffy and therefore make your promotional staff unapproachable. Consider the context and goals of your campaign to determine whether a uniform is the right choice for your staff. Sometimes having staff dress normally can show that your brand is targeted at and relatable to the every-man.

Furthermore, sometimes sorting out uniforms can be a long and stressful process. Different clothes sizes, fabric allergies and comfort concerns just to name a few. Allowing your promotional staff to wear their clothes will save you time and money that could be better spent elsewhere. Staff may also feel more confident and comfortable in their own clothing. Therefore staff be able to promote your brand more effectively. Consider discussing the option of uniforms with your staff beforehand to actively involve them in the process.

Mascots & Costume Character Staff

Moreover, another sort of uniform is a mascot or character costume. They attract mass attention, draw people in, and generate excitement! Push has previously supplied staff to play iconic mascots such as the Duracell Bunny, Angry Birds, and AJ Bell Pig. We always supply a mascot chaperone alongside the mascot. This chaperone helps the mascot to dress, guides them around the event, and helps to manage crowd control. We usually provide staff with performing arts experience because they have the skills to bring the character to life. Click here to read about our previous work.

So there you have it! Hopefully this article has got your mind racing and thinking about the many potential uniform options out there. For more information about our staff here at Push Promotions, please visit our full website, or contact us via email or phone.
